Shri Madhavdasji
Spiritual Guide
1800s
Born in Bengal in 1798, Paramahamsa Madhavdasji was a quintessential Yoga Master from the Mukhopadhyaya family. Driven by a deep devotional faith, he left home at age 23 to master Hatha and Bhakti Yoga and explore the profound link between physical practices and the growth of consciousness. Throughout his remarkable 123-year life, he became a central figure in reviving yogic traditions that were rapidly vanishing from India.
With a visionary sense of the future, Madhavdasji selected only two pupils to master Hatha Yoga, eventually choosing Shri Yogendraji to carry the "Yoga Torch" to the world. A master of diverse traditions, his commitment to spiritual health laid the foundation for the modern yoga movement. Today, his legacy lives on through the authentic teachings preserved at The Yoga Institute, continuing to guide seekers toward inner transformation and holistic wellness.
